Comparision of Nutritional status and Depression in Diabetic Mellitus and Non Diabetic Mellitus Hemodialysis Paients

Abstract
Purpose: This study was done to provide a data base for effective nursing intervention by comparing nutritional status and depression of diabetic mellitus(DM) and non diabetic mellitus(nonDM) hemodialysis patients.

Methods: The subjects were 65 patients doing maintenance hemodialysis selected from outpatient dialysis at one general hospital. The data were collected by physical measurement, medical record, and questionnaires which included subjective global assessment, food recall and Zung¡¯s self-rating depression scale from May. 1 to June. 30. 2006.

Results: The body mass index had a significant difference between DM group and nonDM group. The intake of DM group had more iron and vitamin A than its of non diabetic group. There was significant difference in t-CO©÷ and HDL-Cholesterol between DM group and nonDM group. The other factors related to nutritional status were not significant statistically between two groups. The depression score of DM group(48.35) was significantly higher than its of the nonDM group(43.29).

Conclusions: For improving nutritional status of DM hemodialysis patient, it has been confirmed that research considering properly of sample size and design controlled influencing factors and more specific psychological care for DM hemodialysis patient than nonDM hemodialysis patients.
